New hosting provider

▁ oct 01 2005

So the other day, all of a sudden my host is down. I figure out that the entire server that my site was on, is just dead. Re-installed actually. First, it seems like all of my files are gone, but thankfully my friend took a back up of my mail, data and database. Phew

So I switch to [“dreamhost”:http://www.dreamhost.com]. Cause I’ve heard good things about them. This entry is mostly a test that my database is back up and running.

How did you setup your gratisdns.dk to get them to point your site to Dreamhost? Did you just use A-records to IP or? /Bubber

Dreamhost has some kind of weird scheme for administering DNS on their end. It took me a little while to figure it out, but I’m pretty comfortable with it now. Either you can transfer your nameservers to them (not working for .dk-domains), or you can simply, manually, keep up to date with their nameservers. I’m doing the latter. Dreamhost runs 3 nameservers (namely ns1, ns2 & ns3.dreamhost.com). Whether these are in fact active for your domain is irrelevant. You can ask them directly which records they have, since they blindly believe that those nameservers are in fact active. Those records will always be up to date. You ask their nameservers with the *n?x ”dig”-utility. dig -t mx printf.dk @ns1.dreamhost.com …will ask ns1.dreamhost.com for all MX-records related to printf.dk. I just manually mirror those, and so on with the A-records, etc. Do that, and you should be a happy camper. :-)

Yes, I am aware that noehr.org is currently unavailable, this is due to me being completely swamped at work, not having time to put anything useful on that domain. Besides, that domain is just hosting mail and something not http-related. This is my main site.

Hello Jesper, Million thanks for tips about howto setup Dreamhost on gratisDNS. Do you use mail as well from Dreamhost? I have also dk domain on Dreamhost but I cannot find SMTP server for my domain did you had to do something special on that?

Sure, here’s a screenshot of my setup: http://printf.dk/img/dh-smtp.png Basically setting it to port 587 with Password authentication (no SSL), should work. Good luck! :-)
