Opera's icon on OS X

▁ dec 01 2005

Doesn’t this look better? !http://printf.dk/img/operaicon.png! Read on how to do it.

So yeah, I work for opera, and I’m a mac user. It doesn’t mean I like Opera on OS X. Don’t get me wrong — on linux, it’s excellent, and I use it all the time, but on OS X.. I kind of like safari better sometimes. Today I went through the trouble of installing [“opera 9 preview”:http://snapshot.opera.com], so I could try out what those monkeys in engineering have done now. It kind of looks “ok” now, but the icon still sucks. So I changed it. The one I’m using now is by [“some guy”:http://weboso.deviantart.com/] over at deviantART. Thanks for the icon, buddy. Get [“the icon”:http://code.noehr.org/ICNS/Opera.icns]. Just throw it in /Applications/Opera.app/Contents/Resources/. Should work. Restart Opera if it’s running.

Dude, that a million times better! Have switched now, and finally I can have my icon wherever I want on the dock without having to worry about that shadow throwing it off-balance :)

I am a Mac user and I like Opera on Mac OS X. That’s one of the reasons I work for Opera. I have noticed that the icon isn’t centered on the little arrow in the dock. I keep my dock hidden, and I typically switch applications by keyboard, so I don’t see it very often. But I am always amazed by the way people can be actually upset by such tiny things, to the point where it manages to interfere with their ability to be useful. I used to work for someone who was simply incapable of reading a document with a spelling mistake. I understand that spelling things correctly is extremely helpful. But that kind of obsession with detail makes me wonder how people actually manage to cope with the world, which often doesn’t quite look the way it should. (This person didn’t - wasting vast amounts of time on rubbish instead of doing things that were actually pretty important).

No! That doesn’t look better! What is that? A sloppy red O drooped over a globe? Cheez… ;)

Just got the new Opera preview for Mac and was just as annoyed as you by the icon, so I typed “opera icon” into Google and was brought here. Thanks! You work for Opera? Wanna pass the word along that they need to do something about that icon?

Jesper, 2 years, 9 months ago:

Dan, Of course. I’ll have head of the mac team wake up with a horses head in his bed tomorrow. ;-) I think they’re discussing doing something about the icon generally, and we need to get that decission made before we can replace the one on mac.. I’m doing what I can!

If you haven’t made this icon on your own, could you tell me where you found it, please? I’m a Windows user and I’d like to arrange it to this platform. Greets:)

chlodny: It kind of says in the post where it came from. Just for the record: http://weboso.deviantart.com/

I would like to use this but I do not know how to make it work on my mac. I do not have the folder… /Applications/Opera.app/Contents/Resources/. for some reason. Can anyone help?

Nate, 1 year, 9 months ago:

@Patrick: Click on the Finder icon > On the menu bar at the top, click Go > Go to folder…> type in: /Applications/Opera.app/Contents/Resources/ Press enter and it should bring you to the folder. Now drag and drop the new icon into the folder, at which point it will ask you if you would like to replace the old icon. Click Replace and then restart Opera. If you don’t see the icon change, go down to the dock and hold down ctrl+option-alt and while holding them down, click the finder icon. This will bring up a pop-up which gives you the option to Relaunch and Hide. Click Relaunch and now you should see the new icon. Hope that helped. Great icon by the way; love deviantART!!:D
