HOWTO: Move from Oslo to Amsterdam

▁ apr 22 2007

Yeah yeah, this entry has been delayed by more or less 3 months. Sorry. But, without further ado, the howto on moving from Oslo to Amsterdam! Well, it all starts with…

(If you want, you can see the “pictures”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/jespern/sets/72157600107248818/ straight away.) 1. Decide that you are, in fact, moving to Amsterdam. Living in Oslo is also a good starting point, if you want to follow this guide. 2. Convince your girlfriend to move with you. This is easier, if she is not from Norway. Greece, e.g. is a good origin. 3. Start looking for jobs. “Expatica”:http://www.expatica.com/ has tons of opportunities. 4. Get a job. 5. Quit your current job. Wait until they let you go (as stated in your contract.) 6. Call your dad and tell him that you are moving to Amsterdam. Ask him if he wants to drive you there. Make him agree. 7. Buy tickets for the boat, from Oslo to Frederikshavn (Denmark). 8. Get a hold of 6 or 7 large cardboard boxes. Put all your things in them. Put your clothes in suitcases. Have a give-away “party” where you sell and give away all the things you don’t want to keep. Serve wine at the event. You will make enough money off of this to support a new start in another country. 9. Get a friend and/or coworker to take over your apartment. Leave him the keys at the office before you go. 10. Say goodbye to everybody (Hard part). 11. Put all your packed things in your dads car, and drive to the boat in a snowstorm. 12. Get on the boat, and sleep there. 13. Get off the boat, drive through Denmark, through Germany, to The Netherlands. This will take you about 20 hours. Stop and eat every once in a while. 14. Drive to the location of some people who agreed to have you stay over for some weeks until you find your own place. In my case, this was a coworker. 15. Say goodbye to your dad, as he drives back to Denmark. 16. Find a place to stay. Register with the immigration services, tax office, etc. etc. Get a bank account. 17. Start your job. Live. Enjoy Amsterdam. There you have it! Moving from Oslo to Amsterdam in 17 easy steps. “Again, here’s some pictures.”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/jespern/sets/72157600107248818/

Eirik, I see a problem with your plan, namely the one stating that you’re going to ask me for a good place to stay/book a hotel. You need not book hotels, nor ask for a good place to stay! Our place is open to visitors, and we have a guest bedroom for that very purpose. You guys can come down any time :)

Great photoset, fun to watch the process as a slideshow :) Will be fun to visit you some time in the future, my howto-list for this event is: - Make more money - Save up more money - Plan time off from work - Ask Marianne to plan time off from work at the same time - Ask Jesper for good place to stay - Book tickets and hotel - Leave Tromsø - Arrive in Amsterdam - Meet Jesper and Katie - Have fun, enjoy Amsterdam :)

I really enjoyed your howto. I only finished step 4 and 5 though ;)
