Closing MySQL: Marten Mickos Responds
▁ apr 24 2008
Former CEO of MySQL speaks out with regards to the recent shit storm on the blogosphere on them closing up parts of their source.
Quick summary:
- No current code will be moved to closed source
- The new “online backup” feature for 6.0 will be open for all, under GPL
- They will retail “plugins” on top of this online backup feature, for stuff like encryption and compression
- They haven’t yet decided if the source for these will be given to paying customers or not
- If the source is given to paying customers, this will be leaked in no time
- You can write these yourself
So as it turns out, it’s not really a big deal anyway. Myself, amongst many others, were a little upset about the acquisition, but it seems like we shouldn’t be butt hurt.

I thought the aquisition was cool … Sun is pretty non-evil, although they’ve taken their sweet time open sourcing the JDK.
And besides, MySQL has always been about the non-free extras, so people shouldn’t be so hasty to blame any non-free stuff on Sun.
